Canyon Country unincorporated, CA

Canyon Country comes in two versions, and the unincorporated one is the ring of county land wrapped around the Santa Clarita neighborhood of the same name, in the northeast corner of the valley. Outside the Santa Clarita city limits, Los Angeles County itself governs the canyon mouths and hillsides off Sierra Highway and the canyon roads that branch from it, where city services stop and ranch parcels start. Mobile home parks make up a large share of it, and between them sit older houses on large lots, some with horse corrals, plus steep slopes nobody has built on. Side roads peel off the canyon floors and wind back into the hills rather than lining up in blocks. The businesses here serve land and animals more than shoppers. Tractor Supply on Sierra Highway sells feed, fencing and yard gear, and VFW Post 6110 up the road keeps a bar that doubles as a local meeting spot. For groceries, coffee and parks, residents drop down into city Canyon Country. The sports complex, neighborhood parks and the Metrolink station on Via Princessa are a short drive away, and Santa Clarita Transit buses cover the city side of the line. The plain downside is that nothing out here adds up to a town center. There is no local main street, no corner coffee shop and no park inside the county area, so the car handles every errand and every outing. County-side Canyon Country trades that for open ridges above a suburb whose full set of services sits downhill.
