Carmel Valley Village sits at the upper end of the valley that winds east from Carmel Bay into the Santa Lucia foothills. It lies roughly thirteen miles inland from Carmel-by-the-Sea, spread across a bit more than nineteen square miles of oak woodland, creek bottom, grassland and chaparral. The community grew out of a 1946 airpark development, and when Carmel Valley residents voted on forming their own town in 2009, the measure failed, so Monterey County, not a city hall, runs things. That gives Carmel Valley Village the feel of a rural district more than a town. Hills, vineyards and a handful of small commercial blocks fill the map, and the spacing between houses is generous. Wine is the local business. Tasting rooms and estate vineyards fill the valley floor and the benches above it, and most sit close enough to visit in a single afternoon. For a plate to go with it, Corkscrew Cafe on West Carmel Valley Road shows up on lists of the valley's popular restaurants, and Kathy's Little Kitchen is a lower-key Mexican spot. Beyond the village limits the Santa Lucias rise toward Garland Ranch's high ridges and the Snivley's Ridge loop, and the Carmel Valley Branch Library gives the village a quiet indoor spot for an afternoon. Summers run warmer than they do down on the coast, with the occasional hot spell settling onto the valley floor, and winters stay mild. Errands rely on a car. Monterey and Carmel are the nearest big towns, and the valley road is the way to both. There is no big-box cluster up here, so people plan their shopping around trips down the road. What the valley offers in return is room. The hills sit close, the houses sit far apart, and the main street is short enough to cross in a couple of minutes. Rancho Los Laureles remains part of the village's historical identity, even as wine tasting and trail access shape its modern reputation.
