Carmel Valley Village sits about thirteen miles inland from the coast, up the valley the Carmel River cut through Monterey County. Here the oak hills close in on both sides of Carmel Valley Road, and the village center is only a few blocks long. Homes spread out rather than stack up. Ranch-style houses sit on larger parcels among the oaks, some on the flat valley floor and some higher on the slopes, with long driveways and little to see of the neighbors. Carmel Valley Village began in the 1940s as a small settlement called Airway Village, and the low, scattered feel has stayed. The big outdoor stop is Garland Ranch Regional Park, run by the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District. The Lupine Loop is the flat circuit around the base for an easy morning walk, while Snivley's Ridge is a loop of nearly twelve miles that climbs into the Santa Lucia foothills. Carmel Valley Community Park, right in the village, covers a quieter afternoon. For dinner, Café Rustica at 10 Del Fino Place has a heated patio that welcomes dogs. In the daytime Sunny Bakery Cafe, at 18 East Carmel Valley Road, is the pastry and coffee stop, opening early. Tasting rooms for the valley's wineries are spread through the village for anyone who wants a flight after a hike. Jerome's Carmel Valley Market on Chambers Lane handles most groceries. It is chef-owned, with local produce and a deli counter that gets crowded on Saturday afternoons. Anything bigger means driving down the valley toward Carmel, and nobody walks to the coast from here. The valley road is the main way out, so every trip to the beach, the airport or a big store is a drive of its own. The village is small enough that the market, the bakery cafe and the road to the park sit within a few minutes of one another, and that compact cluster is what makes the valley feel like a town rather than a long stretch of road.
