Culver City is a compact, oddly shaped town on the Westside of Los Angeles County, wedged between Palms, Mar Vista, Baldwin Hills and the 405. Unlike the Los Angeles neighborhoods around it, it runs its own buses, parks and pool, and its downtown pulls in diners from across the region. Downtown is condos and lofts over restaurants, a block from the studio gates. Park East streets still curve along the path of an old speedway, while Blair Hills climbs toward the Baldwin Hills with midcentury houses looking out over the basin. Housing across most of town is prewar and postwar single-family stock, Spanish and Craftsman houses, bungalows and ranches close together, with a sprinkling of duplexes and low apartment blocks. Teardowns keep replacing the older ones with larger builds, and the hills hold roomier midcentury places. Outdoor life leans on a few big pieces. The Ballona Creek bike path starts at Syd Kronenthal Park and runs to Marina del Rey, and Culver City Park connects up to the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook, where the stairs are a popular workout. Veterans Memorial Park has the Plunge, the public pool. Food is a real reason people come. Cognoscenti Coffee, over on the Arts District side of Washington, pulls a careful espresso or pour-over, and the Tuesday farmers market fills Main Street. Daily errands mostly run along Washington, Venice, Sepulveda and Jefferson with Westfield Culver City for bigger shopping, and the E Line runs both toward the beach and toward downtown. The tradeoff is traffic. Culver City still feels like a small town where you run into people you know, even with the studios and the freeway right next door.
