City Reviews & Questions

City Review
Key Words: Antelope Butte, Rural Lots, Lancaster Grid

Lancaster's lettered avenues and numbered streets keep running west long after the city limits end, and Del Sur is where that grid turns into farm country. This unincorporated slice of Los Angeles County gathers around the Antelope Acres crossroads on 90th Street West, roughly nine miles past Quartz Hill. The crossroads is the exception, where a market, a Mexican restaurant, a feed and hardware store, a church and a volunteer fire station cluster together close enough to feel like a small town center. Beyond it, parcels widen and houses get farther apart. Housing in Del Sur runs to single-story ranch houses and factory-built homes on big rural parcels, often with corrals, hay barns, stock trailers and equipment parked out back. Some parcels still grow field crops, and the local 4-H chapter keeps livestock part of everyday life. The Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve fills with wildflowers in spring, and Antelope Butte Vista Point, one of the lookouts along its trail loop, gives a wide view of the valley floor. Closer to home, the flat, quiet roads are where people ride horses, walk dogs and watch the weather move across the mountains. Antelope Acres Market is the everyday stop for a few groceries and a tank of gas, while the Antelope Acres community center, over on Avenue E-8, is where meetings and local events happen. Anything else, from a supermarket to a doctor's office, means a drive of about 13 miles east into downtown Lancaster. The tradeoff is how little is close by. With one small market and one restaurant at the crossroads, forgetting an ingredient can mean a long round trip, and every appointment starts with a stretch of straight road. What Del Sur offers back is a wide sky and room to keep animals on land that still works.
