City Reviews & Questions

City Review
Key Words: Stanislaus River Corridor, Knights Ferry Bridge, Family Vineyard Tastings

East Oakdale is an unincorporated community that follows the Stanislaus River on the far side of Oakdale, at the northern end of the San Joaquin Valley's farm belt. It belongs to the Modesto metro area and sits where the flat valley starts to lift into foothills. The land is the draw. Ranches, vineyards and river bottom share the map, and East Oakdale follows the river rather than a town grid, which makes it feel more like open country than a suburb. The Army Corps of Engineers and the county look after a string of river parks along the Stanislaus, and the ones that matter here sit upstream and downstream near Rodden Road. They offer camping, picnic grounds, trails and fishing spots on a river lined with tall cottonwoods. A short drive east leads to Knights Ferry, a Gold Rush town whose 330-foot covered bridge is billed as the longest west of the Mississippi. Food and drink lean agricultural. Marsella Family Vineyards is a family-run winery that hosts tastings, tours and harvest days by appointment. Bloomingcamp Ranch runs a from-scratch bakery and event venue on Highway 120. Oakdale Cheese & Specialties turns out Gouda from a recipe that has passed through a Dutch-descended family for generations, alongside a market counter that makes it a regular stop on the drive toward the foothills. Oakdale's downtown, a few minutes west, supplies the sit-down restaurants. Highway 120 and Rodden Road tie it together, with the farm lanes that branch off them leading to ranches, orchards and the river access points. There is no center of its own, so nearly everything is reached by car. What it costs is that groceries and most other services sit in Oakdale or farther, so the quiet comes with a daily drive. For anyone who wants to be on the river without leaving the Modesto region, that distance is the whole arrangement.
