East Pasadena is a county-run stretch of Los Angeles County that most visitors assume belongs to its famous neighbor, since it shares the name and the same wall of San Gabriel Mountains on the horizon. Colorado Boulevard, Foothill Boulevard and Rosemead Boulevard, which doubles as State Route 19, are busy commercial roads lined with shopping centers. Single-family houses on established lots fill most of these streets, with apartments and condos closer to the boulevards. East Colorado Boulevard is the local dining strip. A short walk away, Yang Chow serves the slippery shrimp that made its name after a newspaper story in the early 1980s. Dots Cafe, a small bakery cafe on the same stretch, handles coffee and cupcakes all day. Daily errands are easy by car. Grocery stores sit on Huntington Drive and Rosemead Boulevard, and the rest of the shopping is spread along Foothill and Colorado. The Metro stations in Pasadena are a short drive away when a train into downtown beats the freeway. The one local park is a modest patch of lawn on the Arcadia side, and anyone after real trails drives north to Eaton Canyon. The 2025 fire burned in the foothills a few miles up, well away from these flat streets, but the canyon and its trails are still being repaired. What people get in return is an in-between address with a quiet center. East Pasadena sits close to everything its neighbors offer, yet a few turns off Rosemead Boulevard the traffic fades and the blocks feel more like a small town than a pocket of the county.
