El Granada, CA

El Granada is a coastside community on the northern San Mateo County coast, set between Pillar Point Harbor and the sandy shoreline that runs south into Half Moon Bay. Cabrillo Highway is its spine, with the Pacific on one side and open coastal hills on the other, and San Francisco sits well up the coast to the north. Houseberry covers two neighborhoods here. El Granada itself is the hillside above the harbor, with curving streets and ocean views from the upper blocks. Miramar is the flat shoreline strip at the southern end, where cottages face the beach and the bluff trail runs past the front door. Homes across both are mostly single-family houses, from small older beach cottages to larger newer builds. The salt air shows on fences and siding, and the streets are narrow and hilly in places. Outdoor time centers on the water. The Coastside Trail follows the bluff for flat walks and rides, the harbor breakwater is the spot for watching boats and, in big winter swells, the Mavericks break off the point, and the national recreation area of Rancho Corral de Tierra opens onto the ridges above town. Barbara's Fishtrap, open at the harbor since 1971, is the fried seafood institution. Half Moon Bay Brewing Company sits right in town with a waterfront patio, and Sam's Chowder House holds the oceanfront deck just down the highway. Daily life runs on the car. Half Moon Bay is the place for bigger grocery runs, Pacifica is the road north, and State Route 92 climbs over the hills toward the Peninsula, which can back up on beach weekends. Fog and wind are the price of the setting. On a clear evening, with the harbor lights below and a long horizon past them, the trade feels fair, and the early quiet is part of what people come here for.
