El Granada, on the San Mateo County coast between Half Moon Bay and Moss Beach, climbs a hillside above Pillar Point Harbor and feels more like a village than a suburb. Its streets bend with the slope because a railroad company once hired Daniel Burnham to lay out a seaside resort here. Buyers were slow to come, farmers took over much of the empty land, and the curved plan is what lasted. Houses in El Granada are a loose mix of older cottages, mid-sized family homes and newer, larger builds, and the best-placed ones turn toward the harbor. Fog and salt wear on siding and decks, so a well-kept place stands out. Streets are narrow, and sidewalks come and go. Quarry Park, up on Moro Avenue, is the everyday green space. Its trails cross a meadow, run through trees and drop onto the old quarry floor, and a viewpoint looks out over the harbor. The Rancho Corral de Tierra trailheads off Coral Reef Avenue lead into the hills of the national recreation area, and the harbor shore is a short drive or a long downhill walk away. The Press, on Sevilla Avenue, is the cafe locals point to, a family-run place for coffee, house-made bagels and big breakfasts. Along Capistrano Road, Hop Dogma Brewing Company pours small-batch beer in a taproom that welcomes dogs and lets in food from local vendors, and Half Moon Bay Brewing Company adds a waterfront patio and a seafood menu. Spangler's Market, on Avenue Alhambra, covers grocery basics. Highway 1, called Cabrillo Highway here, is the only real road. Half Moon Bay's larger stores sit a few miles south, Pacifica is the way north, and nearly every errand starts in the car, though Quarry Park and the harbor are close enough to visit without one. Wind and gray summer afternoons come with the setting, and beach weekends slow the highway to a crawl. In return you live somewhere you can finish a trail and be at a brewery table or the harbor wall within minutes, and the streets go quiet early.
