City Reviews & Questions

City Review
Key Words: Empire City History, Empire Pool, Modesto Metro Area

Empire sits in Stanislaus County on State Route 132, at the eastern edge of Modesto where the city grid gives way to farm fields, and it counts as part of the Modesto metro area even though it keeps its own name and its own small center. The name carries a story. In 1850 a settler founded Empire City on the Tuolumne River a mile or two to the south, and for a while it was the head of river navigation, a military supply depot and the county's second seat of government. Flooding in the early 1860s wrecked it. The town you see today grew up after the railroad put a station on higher ground in the early 1900s, and two state historical markers still stand near the old site. Today the center is modest, with the Church of the Brethren, a post office and a park strung along the highway corridor. The surrounding land is still agricultural, which gives the edges a working look. What brings people here from elsewhere is mostly the road. Yosemite Boulevard carries commuters between Modesto and Waterford, and travelers use it as a route east toward the foothills. The community's own offer is a county pool, a library and a few local counters on the highway strip, all within a short drive of each other and of the farm roads that fan out into the orchards. For daily life, Modesto does most of the heavy lifting. Larger grocery runs, medical visits and big-box stores sit in the city a few minutes west, and because Empire is small, most trips run by car. The main tradeoff is that Empire is a place you drive through more often than you linger in. For someone who wants a quiet home base with Modesto within easy reach, that distance from the big strips is the point.
