Neighborhood Factors
Market Conditions
Fairfield is the Solano County seat, set where Interstate 80 crosses the low hills between the Bay Area and the Sacramento Valley, roughly halfway between San Francisco and Sacramento. Napa's wine country lies to the west, the Suisun Marsh to the south, and Suisun City sits against its eastern edge. Fairfield is large and its parts feel different from one another. Downtown, Armijo and West Texas hold the older core around the courthouse and Texas Street. North Texas, East Tabor, Dover Terrace and Cement Hill make up the busy middle, where the mall and the markets sit among mid-century tract streets. Woodcreek, Rolling Hills, Paradise Valley and Rancho Solano climb toward the western hills, with curving streets, a golf course and gated sections. Green Valley, Cordelia and Southbrook sit out by the freeway junction and the vineyards, while Travis Air Force Base, Gold Ridge and One Lake fill the east side around the base and a newly built lake. Homes are mostly detached tract houses from the 1960s onward, with newer subdivisions on the edges and older blocks near downtown. Outdoors, Rockville Hills Regional Park offers hundreds of acres of oak woodland and trail, Allan Witt Park covers pools and sports fields, and the Suisun Valley tasting rooms are a drive from the western streets. Weekend visitors come for the Jelly Belly factory tour beside the freeway and, with base clearance, the aviation museum at Travis. For a meal, Rustwater Kitchen and Taproom holds down Texas Street in a restored old building, the Calicraft taproom on Horizon Drive, formerly Heretic, pours beer with a full kitchen, and Journey Coffee Co. Runs cafes on Chadbourne Road and One Lake Drive. Markets along East Travis Boulevard stock Vietnamese, Thai and Mexican groceries that bigger chains skip. Daily life runs on a car. Solano Town Center and the large grocery stores line Travis Boulevard and Texas Street, I-80 leads in both directions, and Amtrak's Capitol Corridor stops at Hannigan Station near One Lake. The main tradeoff is distance. The good places are spread across the city, so a downtown dinner or a hike usually means driving, and the busiest corridors clog at rush hour. Living in Fairfield gets you a mid-sized city with the freeway, the vineyards and the hills all close at hand, more of a working hometown than a stop on the way to somewhere else.
