City Review
Key Words: Grizzly Flats Rebuild, Pioneer Fire District, Sierra Gold Camp

Grizzly Flats is a mountain community southeast of Camino, high enough, at nearly 4,000 feet, for cool summers and winter snow. It began as a gold camp in the 1850s, and the name comes from a grizzly bear that wandered into a mining camp looking for food. Fire struck early too, in 1866 and again in 1869, and after the second one the town was never rebuilt to the same extent. Its story today is another rebuild. The Caldor Fire swept through in August 2021 and destroyed hundreds of homes along with the post office, the elementary school and the church. In 2024 the veteran-led group Team Rubicon was still working on lots, and the first rebuilt homes under streamlined permitting have only recently been finished. The post office reopened early that year, while church services are held in a manufactured home. Pioneer Union Elementary School District serves Grizzly Flats, and the Pioneer Fire Protection District keeps Station 35 here. Before the fire, the church held burger nights for about 100 neighbors, and that sense of everyone showing up for everyone remains a thread in local life. Setting is the draw. Pines, quiet roads and cool summers give the area a feel closer to the high Sierra than to the foothill towns down the hill. Homes range from small houses to places with 40 acres, and the pace is slow, with long views over forested ridges that feel a world away from the valley. Anyone planning a move should expect services to be sparse. Shopping, medical care and most dining sit down the mountain, and the trip to Placerville takes about forty minutes. Rebuild fatigue and isolation come with the place, along with a long drive and a landscape still healing. What keeps people here is a place that is still theirs to make.
