City Reviews & Questions

City Review
Key Words: Fox Grove Park, Hughson Arboretum, Fruit Nut Festival

Hughson is a small city on the Stanislaus County valley floor, east of Modesto and Ceres, close enough for an easy commute and far enough out that orchards still reach the town limits. It is the newest city in the county, incorporated in 1972, though the town itself goes back much further. Hiram Hughson farmed grain on a large ranch from the 1880s, and in 1907 his land went to a town company that laid out streets wide enough for four-horse wagon teams. Peaches took over around 1920 and earned the area a reputation as a peach capital. Almonds and walnuts dominate the acreage today, and new houses have replaced some of the older orchard rows. People who come from elsewhere usually come for one of two things. The Hughson Fruit and Nut Festival fills Hughson Avenue in late April with vendors, classic cars, a beer garden and children's tractor pulls. Fox Grove Recreation and Fishing Access, about sixty-four acres with a mile of river frontage on the Tuolumne, draws kayakers, anglers and bird watchers. Roadside stands such as J & J Ramos Farms keep fruit on the table in season, and the Hughson Arboretum adds a quiet walk through native plants. The downtown core is a few blocks of older buildings, some of them being restored, with small restaurants and shops mixed in. The Hughson Historical Society keeps the old bank building as a museum, which gives the avenue a sense of its past, and the local schools anchor the weekly routine. StanRTA buses link the town to the rest of the county, but daily life depends on a car for anything beyond the main street. Modesto is the nearest big retail center and Turlock has the regional hospital. As houses replace orchard rows, the farm edge keeps moving outward, and what Hughson looks like in another decade will depend on how much fruit and nut acreage stays in production.
