City Review
Key Words: Five Lakes, Lake Tynan, Pajaro Valley Farmland

Interlaken means between the lakes, and in Santa Cruz County the name fits an area with Pinto Lake on one side and Lake Tynan on the other. It covers about ten square miles of the Pajaro Valley, which makes it large for such a thinly settled place, and it sits on the edge of Watsonville. Most of the land is residential or farmed, and shopping is thin, so residents lean on the larger town next door. The area feels like part of the working valley, with fields, orchards and berry rows close to most addresses. The outdoors are a bigger draw than the roads suggest. The main public space is Pinto Lake County Park, where anglers work the pier, a bike pump track and a disc course sit among the lawns, and a vista point looks over the water. The Watsonville Wetlands, an 800-acre freshwater system with more than seven miles of public trails and plenty of birds, are a short drive away, and Mesa Village County Park offers a smaller, quieter green space closer to the lanes. Houses are spread thin, mostly single-family places on large lots, with farm sheds and fences between them. Sidewalks are rare, and what residents get in exchange is quiet and room. For eating, the market town next door does the work. Staff of Life Natural Foods in Watsonville is the natural-food stop, and Fruition Brewing and Kitchen is the brewpub people send visitors to. Closer to home, taco stands and small markets along Green Valley Road cover the basics. Getting around is a drive in every direction, whether into Watsonville for errands or up Highway 1 toward Santa Cruz. A bus route follows part of Green Valley Road for those who prefer not to drive. Interlaken keeps a rural rhythm, and the lakes and the farm calendar keep it from feeling like a suburb.
