Green Valley Road ties together the pieces of Interlaken, a stretch of flat farmland just north of Watsonville. Most of what you pass is open ground, with houses set well apart and a few small businesses along the road, so the place feels more like valley floor than a town with a center. The road's own name is a translation of the old Spanish Cañada Verde, the green valley it follows. Homes are mostly single-family houses on parcels bigger than a city lot, many with room for gardens, sheds and a lot of sky. Streets are narrow lanes that branch off the main road and end at fields or fences, and sidewalks are rare, so the pace stays slow. Mesa Village County Park, at 790 Green Valley Road, is the area's own green space. County Parks pitches it for low-key outdoor time such as tai chi, walking and painting outside, and it stays open into the early evening. Pinto Lake County Park is a bit under half a mile away and adds a fishing pier, disc golf, a nature trail and dog parks for longer outings. Lake Tynan and Drew Lake also fall inside the boundary. Food is a short list. Tacos El Tigre, at 710 Green Valley Road, gets good words for its chorizo taco, and the carne asada and chicken are well regarded too. Harvest Moon Market, at 518 Green Valley Road, handles quick pickups. For a full grocery run or a sit-down meal, people drive a few minutes toward Watsonville, where Safeway, Staff of Life Natural Foods and Fruition Brewing and Kitchen sit about a third of a mile past the edge. A gallon of milk beyond the market means getting in the car, and that is the honest cost of the space. The lakes are the landmarks in Interlaken, and the road names and park signs point back to them more than to any downtown.
