Jamul is a rural community in the backcountry of southeastern San Diego County, strung along Highway 94 where the suburbs of Spring Valley and Rancho San Diego give way to open hills. Keep driving east and the two-lane road winds on to Dulzura and the mountains near the Mexican border. The name comes from the Kumeyaay word Ha-mul, which means sweet water. It was first counted as its own census place in 1980, when it was far smaller than today. The community has grown since, but slowly, and County planning for the area is built around keeping it rural, with dark skies and lots big enough for animals. The biggest change of the last decade sits just past the community line. The Jamul Indian Village opened its casino on Campo Road in 2016 and took over running it in 2018. Renamed Jamul Casino Resort in 2025, it added a 16-story hotel tower, an event center and a rooftop lounge that year, along with restaurants such as Prime Cut Steakhouse and Tony Gwynn's Sports Pub. Wine is the quieter draw. The Highway 94 wine trail heads east from Rancho San Diego through these hills, and more than 60 small growers tend vines here, many of them planted once the fires of 2003 and 2007 took out old avocado groves. Granite Lion Cellars on Jamul Highlands Road pours a long list of about 18 wines in a tasting room shaded by cypress trees, open daily. Rustic Ridge Vineyards on Lyons Valley Road began as a family hobby with vines planted in 2002 and now offers weekend flights, cheese and charcuterie on patios with wide views. Day to day, the town center is the cluster of shops where Highway 94 meets Jefferson, with bigger shopping down the hill in Rancho San Diego. Lyons Valley Road and Proctor Valley Road branch off into the canyons, and since the 2020 Valley Fire burned through part of the community, the County's call for second exit routes in new development has carried extra weight. Traffic is the friction. Casino visitors, commuters and wine tasters all share Highway 94, and residents raised worries about that load from the day the casino was first proposed. Jamul still feels like the place where San Diego's suburbs stop, with vineyards and boulder-strewn hills taking over within a few minutes of the last stoplight.
