City Review
Key Words: Knights Landing Yolo, Sacramento River Town, Black Bart Lore

Knights Landing is the Sacramento River's small stop in Yolo County, a place that began as a crossing and still feels like one. The town stands on a rise that Native peoples once used as a meeting ground, and Dr. William Knight, a physician from Baltimore, set up a ferry here in the 1840s. Steamboats followed, and by 1890 a Southern Pacific branch line had reached town too. Those years explain the layout, since a town that began at a landing keeps its center close to the water. The road crossing and the river landing came first, and the houses and shops grew up around them. The railroad and ferry are gone now, though two state highways still meet here, and the river keeps the town's attention. Out-of-towners come to Knights Landing for the water. The Yolo County boat launch gives public access, and Stingrayz Beach Boardwalk Marina offers slips and a pub where boaters can tie up and grab a drink. The town cemetery south of town is one of several places said to hold the stagecoach robber Black Bart, a small piece of lore for history fans. Beyond the river, the surrounding country is farmland, and the work calendar follows planting and harvest. The closest city is Woodland, the county seat, and it holds most of the stores, clinics and offices that people here depend on. Sacramento is the next step up the road. A library branch and a few small businesses handle daily life in town, and most big purchases are made elsewhere. Anyone moving here should expect long drives, a short list of nearby choices, and a pace that stays slow even at harvest. Highway traffic is light and the roads are flat, which makes the town easy to cross on foot or by bike. What stands out in Knights Landing is how much the river still organizes the place. Fields, levee and highways all lean toward the same water.
