The levee comes first in Knights Landing, and the town second. This small place sits on the Sacramento River in northeastern Yolo County, where State Routes 45 and 113 cross, and the earthen bank holding the water back is the tallest thing on most streets. Houses are modest and close together, and farm fields begin where the grid ends. Locust Street is where eating happens. Las Maracas Mexican Restaurant, at 9540 Locust, does Mexican plates and an American breakfast every day, and Wayside Market on the same street is a roadside kitchen that also stocks a few shelves. Just outside the neighborhood, Stingrayz Marina is the pub and boat stop, a natural place to end a day on the water. Open ground is the river itself. The Knights Landing Boat Launch off State Route 45 is the public way in, a four-acre spot used for launching, fishing and sitting on the bank. In town, a community garden and the Yolo County branch library on Third Street give people somewhere shared to go. The library keeps limited hours on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, so it is worth checking before a trip. There is no big grocery here, so daily errands take planning. The nearest full-service stop is Woodland, the county seat, down State Route 113, and State Route 45 follows the river for anyone headed the other way. Walking works inside town because everything is close, and a bike covers the rest, including the flat road out to the boat launch. Quiet is the real draw. With few services and no nightlife to speak of, evenings are about the river light, a plate from Locust Street, and the occasional farm truck rolling over the highway. The cost shows up in everything beyond a market run, which means a drive. People who live here accept that and take the levee path for a reset.
