City Reviews & Questions

City Review
Key Words: Garvey Avenue, Garvey Ranch Observatory, Heritage Falls Park

A tiled waterfall spills down a hillside off Atlantic Boulevard, the leftover of a 1920s plan to build an east side rival to Bel-Air, and it says a lot about Monterey Park. Ramona Acres, the first subdivision, and the blocks around Garfield and Garvey mix early houses, postwar builds and apartments close to the storefronts. Monterey Highlands and El Repetto are curving streets of midcentury homes on sloped lots, some with long views, and Brightwood near the college filled in almost all at once in the late 1950s. Mama Lu's started its soup dumpling run on Garvey, and Huge Tree Pastry on North Atlantic does Taiwanese breakfast with fan tuan and soy milk. Duck House is known for Peking duck, and the bacalao torta at Cook's Tortas comes on bread baked each morning. Leaflet Coffee House, down that same stretch, is the coffee stop locals mention. The outdoors comes in many small parks. Garvey Ranch Park has an observatory with public viewing on Wednesday nights and a small historical museum. Barnes Park hosts the Thursday evening farmers' market, and Edison Trails gives walkers a path along Garfield. The public golf club on Ramona Boulevard keeps its range lit until late most nights. Daily life leans on the car. 99 Ranch on Garvey and the Ralphs stores on Atlantic handle groceries, Atlantic Times Square adds a movie theater, and Bruggemeyer Library sits near the Garvey storefronts. East Los Angeles College and its Vincent Price Art Museum anchor the south side. The Metro E Line stops just past the southern city limit. Parking is the recurring headache. The strip-mall lots on Garvey and Atlantic jam at lunch and on weekends, and the slopes turn any walk to the store into a climb. In exchange, Monterey Park lets you finish a dumpling dinner on the flats and be looking through a telescope up the hill before the plates are cleared.
