Monterey Pass is the working side of Monterey Park, a corridor of offices, light manufacturing and small food counters along Monterey Pass Road on the east side of the 710. The L.A. Corporate Center anchors the western end, and on weekdays the area runs on commuters, delivery trucks and the lunch crowd. Housing plays a small role here compared with the neighborhoods around it. What homes there are sit on the hillside streets at the edges of the corridor, close to the larger residential tracts of Monterey Highlands and Brightwood. The best reason to know the neighborhood is lunch. and the breakfast spot Z's Crazy Good, and the Corporate Center Cafe feeds the office towers on Corporate Center Drive. A little farther along Monterey Pass Road, Art of Tea runs its tea operation, and Caravan House stocks organic groceries nearby. For a full grocery run or a sit-down dinner, the Ralphs and restaurants of South Atlantic Boulevard in Brightwood are a short drive east. Green space is the weak spot. There's no neighborhood park to speak of inside the corridor, so a walk means heading up to Highlands Park on Casuda Canyon Drive or out to the golf club on Ramona Boulevard, where the driving range stays open late. The payoff is location. The 710 and 10 freeways are right there, which makes Monterey Pass one of the fastest places in the city to get onto the freeway toward downtown Los Angeles. Most people get to know this part of the city through its lunch counters before anything else.
