City Reviews & Questions

City Review
Key Words: Newman Fall Festival, SR 33 Corridor, Small Town Stanislaus

Newman lies in western Stanislaus County, where State Route 33 links Patterson and Crows Landing to the north with Gustine to the south, and Interstate 5 runs a few miles west of town. Simon Newman founded it in 1888, and farming still sets the town's calendar. People in the area know it for the Fall Festival, which includes a carnival each September. The town is compact and easy to read. The business strip follows N Street, the highway frontage, where Jim's Donut and Bagels opens early for donuts and bagels and Mountain Mike's Pizza serves dinner. The older blocks cluster near the center, and newer streets spread outward with subdivisions, a dog park and a long list of small city parks, eighteen in all on the city's own list. Farmland surrounds the town on every side, and Westside Valley Theatres offers an evening out that does not require leaving town. Matteri Field and Lions Park are among the city parks on that list, and for a town this size Newman has an unusually long one. The town library and several grocery stores cover regular errands, with Newman Food Center the one most people name. Getting around is by car for almost everything beyond the core. Modesto, the nearest large city, is the drive for hospitals and larger stores, while Patterson, farther north on the same highway, has a bigger set of chain stores. Commuters use SR 33 and I-5 depending on the destination. Small-town living narrows the choices quickly, though it also means most people know where the park, the bakery case and the pharmacy counter are without checking a map. Dining is mostly Mexican restaurants and pizza, with Good Times on Main Street as the one full-service American option, and for anything different you drive. In September the carnival and festival crowd shows what the town does best, which is turn out for each other. The SR 33 corridor is Newman's practical spine, connecting its compact center with the wider West Side.
