Pasadena sits where the Arroyo Seco drops out of the San Gabriel Mountains, at the western end of the valley in Los Angeles County. Old Pasadena is the walkable core, a restored brick downtown with apartments over shops. Linda Vista climbs the hills above the Arroyo with Spanish Colonial and midcentury houses on big lots, and Hastings Ranch out east is postwar ranch houses under the mountains, where rebuilding continues on the upper streets after the Eaton Fire of January 2025. The Rose Bowl Loop, a flat paved circuit of about three miles around the stadium, fills with runners and dog walkers from dawn on, and the Lower Arroyo below the Colorado Street Bridge has trails, a fly casting pond and an archery range. Victory Park hosts a Saturday farmers market. Eaton Canyon is still closed after the fire. Eating out follows the corridors. Union downtown makes pasta from scratch, Ferrazzani's on Lincoln Avenue builds Italian sandwiches, and Old Sasoon on Allen has baked khachapuri for about four decades. The coffee locals bring up is Jones Coffee Roasters on South Raymond, a warehouse room that roasts on site and skips the Wi-Fi. Errands spread along Lake Avenue, Fair Oaks and Foothill, with Trader Joe's and Erewhon a few blocks apart on South Lake and Vroman's, open since 1894, on Colorado. Light rail follows the freeway median into Old Pasadena and on to downtown Los Angeles. Beyond the center, most errands take a car. Big events are the cost. Game days, concerts and New Year's week close roads around the Arroyo and Colorado, and Lake backs up at ordinary rush hours too. Pasadena residents end up knowing two cities, the one visitors crowd into and the one of porch-lined side streets and early laps around a stadium that sits empty most mornings.
