Poway sits in a broad inland valley of North County San Diego, just east of Interstate 15 and Rancho Bernardo, with Iron Mountain and the Ramona backcountry rising behind it. It incorporated in 1980 after a long run as a farming community and still calls itself the City in the Country, a motto that holds up once you leave the main roads. The city's six neighborhoods split along a few lines. Old Poway is the historic center, built around Old Poway Park and its Saturday market. To the west, Rancho Arbolitos and South Poway do most of the city's business, with the main shopping strip, the civic center and the business park along Scripps Poway Parkway. North of Twin Peaks Road, Green Valley and Old Coach trade sidewalks for hills and horse country, and Old Coach adds golf, estate lots, Lake Poway and the Blue Sky reserve. Garden Road takes the eastern end, where 1970s ranch streets give way to Sycamore Canyon and the Iron Mountain trailhead. Housing is overwhelmingly single-family, with a lot of single-story ranch homes from the 1970s and 1980s and custom estates toward the northern edge. Under Proposition FF, rural and planned-community land in Poway cannot be built more densely without a public vote. Outdoors is the city's calling card. Trails link nearly every neighborhood, the lake fills up with anglers, campers and music in the park on warm weekends, and Iron Mountain and Mount Woodson are regional hikes. Food leans casual. The Hamburger Factory has served breakfast and burgers in Old Poway Park for more than four decades, Baba Kabob is the family-run stop for gyro boxes, and O'Brien's Boulangerie bakes the bread for its own brunch menu. Most errands happen along Poway Road, the commercial spine of town. MTS routes 944 and 945 run to transit centers in Sabre Springs and Rancho Bernardo, but most trips are by car, and Interstate 15 is the link to the rest of the county. Change is the live debate. A 2017 plan for that road allows denser, walkable mixed-use buildings, and residents remain divided over it. Large parts of the city also sit in high fire hazard terrain, and the Cedar and Witch Creek fires both forced major evacuations. On a warm evening, with the lake loop full of walkers and horses grazing on the hillsides north of Twin Peaks, the motto still fits.
