If Poway has a town square, it is Old Poway Park on Midland Road, and the blocks around it make up the Old Poway neighborhood. The area runs from Poway Road north to Twin Peaks Road between Community Road and Espola Road, a compact slice of the city that holds most of what longtime locals mean by the old town. The park itself sets the tone. Restored antique cars of the Poway-Midland Railroad sit beside the green, the Saturday farmers market is one of the biggest in the county, and the Arts and Crafts Guild sets up its own outdoor market there. Next door, Old Poway Village is a row of Western-style storefronts with small shops and places to eat. Aubrey Park and Veterans Park connect to the grounds, and trails lead off toward Twin Peaks and Kent Hill, a 22-acre hillside the city bought to keep open. Houses are mostly single-story ranch homes, many dating from the 1970s like much of the city, on streets that let people walk to the park on market day. Eating out starts on Midland Road. Hamburger Factory has been in Old Poway Park for more than forty years, serving cinnamon bacon pancakes in the morning and tri-tip melts and burgers later. Smokin J's BBQ, a few doors down, is the stop for brisket and coleslaw. On Poway Road, Baba Kabob is a family-run counter known for its gyro box, and Coffee Wave opened in January 2026 with about forty coffee flavors, affogatos and Saturday patio music. Errands stay close. Sprouts anchors the shopping center on Poway Road, and fast casual chains line the same strip. Two MTS bus lines, the 944 and 945, link up with transit centers in Sabre Springs and Rancho Bernardo, and Poway Road leads west to Interstate 15. Poway Road is the part still in question. The busy commercial road along the southern edge is slated for denser, mixed-use buildings under a specific plan the city adopted in 2017, and residents remain split on how much that should change the old-town feel. On a Saturday morning, with the train running and the market crowded, Old Poway is where the rest of the city ends up.
