Garden Road takes up the eastern end of Poway, where the city's streets give out against Iron Mountain and the boulder hills along Highway 67. It shows the rural side of the City in the Country, with Old Poway on its western side and Green Valley up across Twin Peaks Road. Most homes are single-story ranch houses from the 1970s, many on cul-de-sacs near the local elementary school, with shady yards and fruit trees that have had decades to grow. Farther east, toward Sycamore Canyon, properties spread out and the pavement gives way to horse trail easements, septic systems and open hillside. Lots and slopes vary a lot from one street to the next, so two houses a few hundred feet apart can feel quite different. Trails are the reason many people choose Garden Road. Garden Road Park covers seven acres and connects to the Garden Road Trail, a one-mile path that follows Poway Creek east through the Sycamore Canyon streets and out to open space. The Iron Mountain Trail starts at the staging area where Poway Road meets Highway 67 and climbs about three miles to the summit. The last stretch is steep and rocky, and the parking lot is usually full early on weekend mornings. Food is closer than the setting suggests, because the neighborhood's southwest corner reaches into the eastern end of the business park. O'Brien's Boulangerie on Stowe Drive bakes its own bread for brunch plates and sandwiches, and its lobster roll and juice mimosa flight get the attention. Victor's Kafe, farther along Stowe, does gyros and kabob plates at weekday and Saturday lunch. Nutmeg Bakery on Danielson Street handles stuffed French toast, shakshuka and chocolate croissants. Groceries mean a short drive west on Poway Road to Sprouts or Stater Bros. Highway 67 sits at the eastern edge for the run up to Ramona, while Poway Road and Scripps Poway Parkway lead west toward Interstate 15. Nearly every errand starts in a car. State fire maps put much of this end of the city in the highest hazard category, and the chaparral that frames those views is part of the reason. Living out here also means accepting a longer drive to everything beyond town. On a clear evening the light catches Iron Mountain from almost every backyard, and plenty of residents can name the trail they walked that morning.
