Rio Vista, CA

Rio Vista sits on the Sacramento River in eastern Solano County, where Cache Slough meets the river and the Delta opens out in every direction. Fairfield and Lodi are each about twenty minutes away on Highway 12, and the town sits roughly halfway between San Francisco and Sacramento, which makes it a small center of its own for a wide stretch of river country. The Helen Madere Memorial Bridge is the landmark, carrying Highway 12 over the water and opening and closing the town to everything beyond it. Locals still tell the story of Humphrey, the humpback whale that took a wrong turn up the river in the 1980s. In October the town hosts its Bass Derby, billed as the oldest striped bass contest on the West Coast. Houseberry splits the town into three parts. Downtown Rio Vista covers Main Street and the riverfront, with older streets and the museum, gallery and farmers market. Trilogy at Rio Vista is the golf-centered community around Summerset Drive. Liberty is the newest corner, with recent single-story homes and shared lawns and courts. Each reads differently, and the difference is mostly about age and layout. Outdoors is built around the water. The riverfront promenade gives a place to walk, Sandy Beach Park offers a boat launch and campsites, and the Trilogy golf course welcomes public play. The Dutra Museum of Dredging adds a stop for anyone curious about river work. Dinner runs from casual to waterfront. The Point Restaurant sits on Marina Drive by the river, Tortilla Flats serves Mexican plates on Highway 12, Burgerlicious handles burgers, and Hap's Taps is a bar and grill. Main Street has its own list of cafes and steak houses. Daily life is a drive. Highway 12 is the main road, groceries are in town, and a bigger shopping trip means heading toward Fairfield.
