City Reviews & Questions

City Review
Key Words: Montebello Hills, Japanese Grocery, Del Mar Avenue

South San Gabriel ranks among the smaller unincorporated pieces of Los Angeles County, under a square mile of homes where the valley floor begins climbing into the Montebello Hills. Housing is almost all single-family, and most of it is owner-occupied. The northern blocks sit on flatter ground, while streets on the southern side start to tilt uphill toward the oil-field hills. Potrero Grande Drive and Del Mar Avenue carry most of the through traffic, and the side streets stay quiet. The few local businesses share a Japanese thread. Pine Hills Nursery on Del Mar Avenue has grown plants for landscapers and home gardeners since 2002, and a second nursery nearby adds to the sense that this corner of the valley still has room for growing things. Open space is close by without being inside the line. The Rio Hondo bike path follows the river a short ride east, and the big county recreation area around the Whittier Narrows gap sits just beyond it, with lakes and trails. A short drive south, the public golf course in neighboring Montebello has been open since 1928. Everything else is a quick drive. Supermarkets, banh mi and dim sum are a few minutes north on Garvey Avenue in Rosemead, chain stores cluster at the Montebello mall off the 60. The 60 runs just beyond the hills, so a freeway on-ramp is never far. The tradeoff is having almost no local institutions. Because the county governs South San Gabriel, decisions about roads and services come from a board that also oversees much larger places, and plenty of mail arrives addressed to Rosemead. In return the community stays small and plainly residential, a few quiet streets where the neighbors are the main landmark.
