City Reviews & Questions

City Review
Key Words: Napa Valley Landmarks, Bothe-Napa Redwoods, Silverado Trail

St. Helena is the valley town that has made a point of staying a town. It sits between Yountville and Calistoga along Highway 29 and Silverado Trail, and the city bars chain restaurants, so downtown is mostly independent shops and kitchens. 2026 is the city's 150th year. Houseberry covers the city as a single neighborhood, and two separate pages sit just beyond it. Deer Park rises into the hills past the city limit, and Angwin is up on Howell Mountain above them both. Old streets surround downtown, with Victorian and bungalow houses close to Main and vineyard ground beyond them. Wine history is everywhere. Beringer Vineyards, Charles Krug Winery and the Culinary Institute of America's Greystone campus are the best-known stops, and the vineyards that ring town count among the valley's prized plantings. North of town, Bothe-Napa Valley State Park holds a grove of coast redwoods, a cool and shaded change from the open vineyards. Silverado Trail runs along the opposite side of the valley from Highway 29, giving a second north to south route through the same vines. For a table, Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch at 738 Main pairs a restaurant with a small general store and opens early for coffee. Goose & Gander handles dinner for those who want a longer evening, and Charles Krug Winery is also a stop for a tasting. Daily life in St. Helena revolves around Main Street and the two highways. VINE buses link the town to Napa and Calistoga, the valley's hospital sits in nearby Deer Park, and bigger shopping trips go down valley to Napa. Parking, quiet and the best dinner tables are all things to plan around, since the town is built around visitors, especially in autumn. St. Helena, celebrating its 150th year on its own Main Street, has plainly decided what it wants to look like.
