Main Street is where St. Helena makes sense. The town sits in the upper Napa Valley, with Yountville down valley and Calistoga up valley, and for several blocks the street is lined with shops, tasting rooms and restaurants, with residential streets running off on both sides. Homes lean old around the center. Victorian houses from about 1900 still stand on Oak Avenue and Spring Street, with bungalows filling in the blocks between them. Vineyard rows begin close to the last of the houses, so a stroll in almost any direction ends at vines. Crane Park and Lyman Park are the town parks, and a skate park sits within the same boundary. A paved stretch of the Napa Valley Vine Trail opened in 2024 and now links the town to Calistoga, which suits a morning bike ride or a long walk beside the vineyards. Breakfast usually means The Model Bakery at 1357 Main, known for its English muffins and espresso, or Gillwoods Cafe at 1313 Main for a sit-down plate. Gott's Roadside at 933 Main has been serving burgers here since 1999 and handles lunch for anyone who wants it fast. Farther along Main, Sunshine Foods at 1115 Main has operated since 1975 and keeps its deli open until 8 each evening. Sunshine also has a meat and seafood counter, cheeses and bakery items, so much of the weekly shopping happens close to downtown. Safeway covers the bigger loads. Anyone living near Main can do most errands without a car, and the VINE bus and Highway 29 connect the rest of the valley. Crowds are the cost of living in St. Helena. Weekends and harvest weeks put visitors on the sidewalks, and the restaurants fill early. Walk a block or two off Main on a weekday evening, though, and the place goes back to being small, with old Victorians on one side of the street and vines on the other.
