City Reviews & Questions

City Review
Key Words: Resort History, Valencia Town Center, Hill Town

Val Verde is a hill town with a long memory. The community sits on unincorporated Los Angeles County land in the northwest corner of the Santa Clarita Valley, a few miles west of the freeway and Six Flags Magic Mountain, and in the decades before civil rights law it was one of the few Southern California resorts open to Black visitors. That resort past still shows in the streets. Narrow roads bend with the hillsides, and small wood cottages from the early decades sit beside larger houses added over the years, many on sloping, irregular lots. Out on Hasley Canyon Road a manufactured-home park adds a different option. Val Verde Park is the civic heart, a county park on Arlington Street where community gatherings still happen. Beyond it the grass and chaparral run up toward the ridgelines, and the quiet lanes make for easy walks at dusk, with views across the canyon that change color with the season. Eating out means a short drive east to a strip of storefronts on The Old Road. Tacos at Las Delicias Sport Taquería are the usual order, and that row has a sushi counter and a donut shop for early mornings. The tradeoff is distance. There are no supermarkets or cafes within the community itself, the nearest freeway on-ramp is several miles away, and the drive to work in the San Fernando Valley starts with a winding stretch before it ever reaches the 5. Living in Val Verde means being part of a place with a known story. The park that anchored the resort years is still where neighbors meet up.
