Allendale sits along Interstate 505 in rural Solano County, west of Dixon, and what it offers is room. Acreage is the norm. Listings in this stretch of rural north Vacaville run from six-acre parcels to estates of 25 acres or more, many with barns, arenas or space for a few animals, and the setting is rolling hills with long views from the higher lots. Houses are mostly single-family homes with three or four bedrooms, set well back from the road and often paired with detached garages or shops. Almond orchards are part of the surroundings, watered by the Solano Irrigation District, so the farming year is easy to read from the road. There is no park or trail inside the boundary. For public green space, people head to Lagoon Valley Park in Vacaville, a 306-acre regional park wrapped around a 105-acre lake, with disc golf and walking trails. Closer to home, the countryside itself does the job. Nothing out here sells a sit-down meal, and an honest list of local eateries is short because it is empty. Dining and errands mean Vacaville, Winters or Dixon, each about eight miles off, and the interstate is the route to all three. Gates Ranch Meat Company on English Hills Road processes beef, lamb, hogs and game for ranchers, though it has no retail counter and is not set up for walk-in customers. Everything runs on a car here, and there is no bus to lean on. Plan grocery trips in batches, because a forgotten item means a round trip of about sixteen miles. Ray Bradbury borrowed the Allendale name for a fictional town in a short story, but the real place is quiet, spread out and a good deal calmer than anything on the page. Distance is the point of living here, and it starts at the end of a long driveway.
