Alta Mesa sits in the middle of Moraga, on the higher ground the name implies, a short hop from the Moraga Center shops and the 40-acre Moraga Commons. That central position is the whole appeal: you are close to the bandshell concerts, the splash pad, and the skate park at the Commons without sitting right on the busier Moraga Road traffic. Homes are classic Lamorinda, ranch and split-level styles on rolling streets, with the lots and mature plantings that come with a town built out decades ago. It is residential and calm, and most of what you need day to day is a short drive rather than a walk. The honest part: like the rest of Moraga, you are committing to the over-the-hill commute, with no BART or freeway in town and a climb through Orinda or Lafayette to reach Highway 24. What you trade for that is one of the more centrally located addresses in a town where being near the Commons and the schools is the point.
