Amesti is built around Pinto Lake County Park, and the park sits inside the boundary on Green Valley Road just north of Watsonville. Everything else here, a scatter of houses and a market, is arranged around that big patch of water and grass. The park is a long list of things to do. A fishing pier reaches into the lake, multi-use trails loop the shoreline, and the fields host soccer and baseball. There is a disc golf course, a bike pump track, separate small and large dog parks and reservable pavilions with grills. A vista point and a shrine to the Virgen de Guadalupe look over the water, and the adjoining city side of Pinto Lake carries a bronze plaque about the first coast redwoods Spanish explorers recorded. The gates keep sunrise to sunset hours. The name belongs to Jose Amesti, who held the Rancho Los Corralitos grant, though the old ranch is hard to spot today. The roads now run past newer single-family houses on lots larger than you find in town, and past open ground left for farming. Evenings are quiet away from the park, and the fields beyond the houses keep the horizon open. For food, Corralitos Brewing Company is a short drive from Amesti and pours fruited beers with indoor and outdoor seating and rotating food pop-ups. Freedom Meat Lockers, a butcher shop that has been making sausage since 1970, turns out about thirty varieties in house, and the Bavarian cheese sausage is the one people repeat. Harvest Moon Market is right at the edge for staples, and a Safeway sits about a tenth of a mile beyond it. Beyond those, errands usually mean a car. The main drawback is that dinner out and a full grocery trip both mean driving to the Watsonville side, and the park is the only gathering place within the boundary.
