In San Jose, Berryessa Station carries a name that promises more than the geography delivers, and it is worth being clear-eyed about that. Despite the name, the Berryessa BART station actually sits a fair distance to the south, in the neighboring area, so this is not the walk-to-the-platform transit village the label suggests. Housing is mostly older single-family streets on flat ground, with the busier corridor frontage given over to commercial and industrial buildings. Brooktree's quieter residential tracts border it to the east, so the feel shifts quickly once you turn off Oakland Road. Food is a few minutes away. Chez Sovan, a longtime Cambodian kitchen on Oakland Road, is known for amok, a coconut-milk fish curry, and keeps lunch hours on weekdays. Near the flea market, Claw Shack is the place for a bag of Cajun-style crawfish and crab, while B Cafe beside it is the stop for boba, fruit teas and a brown sugar pearl milk drink. On weekends, plenty of people do their produce shopping along the long farm row at the San Jose Flea Market. Townsend Park is the closest green space, a neighborhood park on Townsend Park Circle with tennis courts, a horseshoe pit, playgrounds and an exercise course. For a longer walk, the Penitencia Creek trail begins its paved run near Jackson Avenue and heads east toward the foothills, a short drive south. Sprouts on East Brokaw Road, with its deli and sushi counter, is a short drive for groceries. Both I-880 and I-680 are within easy reach. Orange and Green Line trains call at the Berryessa/North San José station, and VTA's Rapid 500 bus runs from there to downtown. For a buyer drawn in by the station name, the practical move is to check exactly how far the BART station really is before deciding. As a reasonably priced, freeway-convenient north-side address, it holds up, so long as you set expectations about the walk to transit.
