Bethel Island sits in the Sacramento and San Joaquin Delta in eastern Contra Costa County, reached by a single bridge from Cypress Road in Oakley. Water organizes everything here. Sloughs wrap the island, marinas dot its edges, and a good question to ask a new neighbor is which dock they use. Homes on Bethel Island follow the water. Many are waterfront houses with their own slips, along with older cottages that began as weekend fishing cabins after the war and a handful of mobile home parks. Delta Coves, a canal-front community of newer houses, began selling homes in 2019. For outdoors, the draw is the Delta itself. Franks Tract, the big flooded stretch beside the island, is bass territory, and there are launch ramps at Sugar Barge, Hennis Marina, Bethel Harbor and Beacon Harbor. The San Joaquin Yacht Club is based here. Land trails are scarce, so walks tend to follow Bethel Island Road or the levee edges. Eating happens along Bethel Island Road and at the docks. The Buzzy Bean at 6080 is the coffee and pastry stop. La Villa Mexican Restaurant at 6111 is known for steak burritos and fajitas, Isla Bonita at 6256 for chilaquiles and tamales, and Delta Sports Bar and Grill at 6210 for brisket nachos and burgers. Sugar Barge Waterfront Bar and Grill sits beside its marina on the island's east side. The Rusty Porthole, at 3893 Willow Road just past the neighborhood line, serves burgers and steaks and offers guest docking. Delta Deli and Cafe handles quick lunches. Groceries and bigger errands mean crossing the bridge to Oakley or driving on to Brentwood or Antioch. Highway 4 is the connection to the rest of the East Bay, and a car is a given. The bridge is also the catch. One road in and out limits your options when traffic is heavy, and the island sits low behind levees maintained by a local improvement district. On a calm evening, with boats tied up and grills lit along the docks, the island feels more like a harbor village than a suburb.
