Bonita Long Canyon follows a canyon that splits off the Sweetwater Valley and climbs southeast toward Eastlake, and it belongs to Chula Vista even though many addresses here read Bonita. That double identity has history behind it, since annexation fights among Chula Vista, National City and unincorporated Bonita went on for decades. Houses line the canyon rim in long rows of pale stucco under red tile roofs, many with back fences that look straight down into coastal sage scrub. Expect tract homes on curving streets and cul-de-sacs, a few townhome courts with greenbelt views, and bigger view lots up near Corral Canyon Road. The canyon floor was left wild, so lilac, monkey flower and cactus still cover the slopes. Bonita Long Canyon Park on Coltridge Lane is the neighborhood playground, with a tot lot and two spots that can be reserved for bounce houses. Longer walks start down in the valley. Rohr Park has an easy 2.6-mile loop around the ponds and palms of the Chula Vista Golf Course, with free parking next to the county library branch, and the Sweetwater trails nearby are shared with horses. Bonita Road, along the northern edge, holds the restaurants. TJ Oyster Bar at 4410 is the one people drive in for, a walk-in seafood room known for smoked tuna fries, campechana and green aguachile. Romesco, from the Plascencia group, mixes Baja and Mediterranean cooking with paella and slow-cooked short rib. Better Buzz Coffee runs a drive-thru near the golf course. Errands stay close to that same road. Vons at 4404 Bonita Road covers groceries, the Bonita-Sunnyside library and the Bonita Museum and Cultural Center sit a few doors apart, and Otay Lakes Road climbs south toward Eastlake and the bigger shopping centers. Most trips still start in the car. Living on the rim in Bonita Long Canyon means sharing space with the canyon. Coyote pups call at night in spring, rabbits and the occasional rattlesnake turn up in yards, and some owners line pool fences with mesh. The payoff is a back patio that still faces open hillside, the same scrub the canyon held before any houses arrived.
