Calavera Hills fills the northeastern edge of Carlsbad between El Camino Real and the Oceanside and Vista city lines, with SR-78 along its northern side and Tamarack Avenue to the south. Hills, trails and an old volcanic plug give it a more outdoorsy feel than the flatter suburbs nearer the coast, and Robertson Ranch sits just to the south. Housing spans roughly three decades. More than fifteen subdivisions went in from the late 1980s into the 2010s, so one street might have older ranch-style houses on bigger lots and the next a newer tract like the Trails of Calavera Hills. Townhomes and condos round out the mix. Trails are the main draw. The Calavera Trail runs through the neighborhood and links to the Lake Calavera Preserve just over the line, where paths wind past the reservoir and up the volcanic plug for views that reach the ocean on clear days. Hidden Canyon Park sits on Vancouver Street, and Ann D. L'Heureux Dog Park is on Carlsbad Village Drive. Calavera Hills Community Park on Glasgow Drive adds lighted fields, a gym, a community garden and summer jazz concerts. The shopping centers along El Camino Real near SR-78 hold the neighborhood's best-known food. Spirito's Italian Diner has been making meatballs, bread and red gravy from scratch for more than 30 years and has had its turn on a Food Network diner show. Top of the Bagel, a family-run bakery, opens before dawn for New York style bagels and also supplies local coffee houses. Paris Baguette handles coffee and pastries nearby. Errands are simple with Vons, Sprouts and Smart & Final all on El Camino Real, and The Shoppes at Carlsbad just across the road. SR-78 and I-5 meet close by, and the Coaster stops in Carlsbad Village, 10 to 15 minutes west by car. Calavera Hills Elementary and Calavera Hills Middle School sit near Tamarack Avenue. The ocean feels farther than the map suggests. Getting to the sand takes 15 to 20 minutes by car, which is a real gap in a city known for its beaches. For people in Calavera Hills, a weekend often starts with a bagel on El Camino and ends on top of the old volcano looking west toward the water.
