Peacocks wander the canyon at the center of Rancho Carrillo, a hillside neighborhood in southeast Carlsbad built around the old weekend ranch of actor Leo Carrillo. The neighborhood runs from El Fuerte Street east to Melrose Drive, between Palomar Airport Road and Alga Road, and it sits greener and hillier than the flatter master plans to the west. Most homes went up between the late 1990s and 2004, spread across about 18 small villages. Spanish Colonial styling runs through the whole place. Some villages are gated and some are not, and the mix includes detached houses and townhomes. Public schools here belong to San Marcos Unified rather than Carlsbad Unified. The park is the reason to come. Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park covers 27 acres of the original ranch, with a 1930s adobe hacienda, a barn, a small art studio Carrillo built for his wife and gardens full of cactus. Dozens of peafowl descend from pairs he brought in 1937. Entry is free, it closes Mondays, and dogs stay outside. A willow and sycamore creek follows the trail beside it, part of a 3.6-mile Rancho Carrillo trail network split by Melrose Drive into an east loop that reaches the San Marcos trails and a west loop toward Alga Norte. Food is mostly next door. Inside the boundary, Pizza Port on Gateway Road pours its own IPAs alongside pizza. A few minutes away in the Bressi Ranch village center, Luna Grill does Mediterranean plates and Bird Rock Coffee Roasters handles the morning cup. Groceries mean Bressi Ranch too, where Trader Joe's and Sprouts sit on Gateway Road. Driving is the default, with Palomar Airport Road as the freeway connection. Retail inside the neighborhood is close to nil, so even coffee means leaving. McClellan-Palomar Airport is close by on the far side of Palomar Airport Road, and its commercial flights have drawn noise complaints. Walk the creek trail in the late afternoon and you'll often hear the peacocks before you see the hacienda roof through the sycamores.
