Calistoga sits at the top of the Napa Valley, where Highway 29 and Highway 128 meet and the valley closes in toward Mount St. Helena. Lincoln Avenue is the main street, lined with Western-style storefronts, and the residential blocks run back from it toward the Napa River and the vineyards. Housing starts with the Sam Brannan Cottage at 109 Wappo Avenue, a survivor from the 1860s hot springs resort that is now part of an inn. Downtown blocks follow a compact street grid that is easy to learn, and vineyards pick up where the grid stops. Pioneer Park and Logvy Community Park give the neighborhood two open lawns. The Napa Valley Vine Trail runs south to St. Helena on a path that opened in 2024, and on Saturday mornings from 9 to 1 growers and makers gather on Washington Street beside the community center. Calistoga Roastery at 1426 Lincoln has been roasting coffee here since 1992 and also sells pastries and breakfast. Cafe Sarafornia at 1413 Lincoln is billed as a survivor among the valley's old diners and serves breakfast all day, with a menu that runs from corned beef hash to omelets. The Sharpsteen Museum at 1311 Washington was started by a retired Disney animator and holds his hand-built dioramas of the old hot springs resort and an early Chinatown. The exhibits run from prehistory through the years after World War I, and entry is free with a suggested donation. Chain stores and restaurants are barred, and the roads in are narrow, which keeps the pace slow. Isolation cuts both ways in Calistoga. For a big grocery run, the drive is down valley to St. Helena or Napa, and spa season brings visitors to the sidewalks. By evening, though, Lincoln Avenue is mostly people on foot heading home from dinner, with the mountain looming at the end of the road.
