Carriage Crest sits in the southwest corner of Carson, where Figueroa Street and Sepulveda Boulevard meet near the Harbor Freeway. It's a small grid of single-story houses built around its own five-acre park, and a lot of daily life happens within a short walk of it. Homes in Carriage Crest are mostly single-family tract houses from the city's 1950s and 1960s building boom, when the old Dominguez rancho land filled in with subdivisions. Expect stucco ranch fronts, attached garages, wide driveways and modest backyards. Carriage Crest Park, on Figueroa, is the local green space. For a pool or tennis, Foisia Park in Avalon Village is a short drive east, with a swimming pool, tennis and handball courts and a boxing gym. Food on the Figueroa side leans Salvadoran. Head north to Carson Street and you're in the city's Filipino food district, where Tita Celia's has been serving adobo, kare-kare and lumpia for about 35 years. Target covers most of a week's shopping, International Plant Growers on West Sepulveda sells plants and garden supplies, and Kaiser Permanente's Main Street Health Pavilion is on the neighborhood's east side. The 110 and 405 are both close, which makes commutes toward downtown Los Angeles, the South Bay beaches or the ports simple to start. The freeway access comes with freeway sound, and the wide boulevards at the edges are built for cars, so walking to dinner means crossing some busy lanes. Inside the grid it's calmer. On a warm evening the lights on the park's diamond and court are usually the brightest thing on the block.
