Carroll Park is one of the smallest and oldest historic districts in Long Beach, a single oval loop of a neighborhood tucked between Third and Fourth Streets just east of downtown. Its defining feature is the landscaped central median that gives the district its name and its shape, ringed by Craftsman bungalows and early-1900s homes built largely between 1898 and 1928, with a few rarer styles in the mix. Because it is so compact and set just off the Fourth Street Retro Row corridor, residents can walk to vintage shops, cafes, and the Art Theatre in minutes while living on an unusually quiet, almost hidden street. The tradeoffs are the ones that come with a tiny, century-old enclave: very limited inventory, small lots, and the upkeep of historic houses. For buyers who prize a strong sense of place and walkable proximity to the Fourth Street scene, Carroll Park is a gem that rarely comes up.
