Casa de Oro fills the hills that roll down from Grandview Drive toward Highway 94, with houses that look across at the big peak next door instead of sitting on it. It is the southern and eastern half of unincorporated Casa de Oro-Mount Helix, and the name is Spanish for house of gold. Spring Valley lies across the freeway, and Rancho San Diego begins to the east. Housing here is mostly California ranch homes and midcentury houses on generous lots, set along curving streets that follow the contours. Many yards mix mature landscaping with boulders that were simply left where they sat. Closer to Campo Road and the freeway, the mix adds apartment complexes and smaller houses. Few streets run straight for long. Dog owners head to Lonny Brewer County Park on Fury Lane, which has three separate off-leash areas sorted by dog size, agility gear and shade from old oaks on grassy slopes. Mt. Helix Park is just over Grandview Drive in the neighboring half of the community, and the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge trails in Rancho San Diego are close by for flat walks and birding. Eating out leans Italian. Gaetano's, at the eastern end of Campo Road, turns out pizza and a meatball sub that reviewers keep praising. DiLeone's on Jamacha Road has been serving red-sauce dinners for more than 35 years in a family-run room, and the spumoni is the standard way to finish. Avocado Boulevard adds a strip of quick stops, including a Starbucks, a Thai kitchen and a sushi bar. Groceries usually mean Smart & Final on Avocado Boulevard or the Vons a little farther north in El Cajon. Highway 94 is the main road toward downtown San Diego, and Highway 125 links north to Interstate 8. Walking anywhere useful is hard. The streets climb, and the shopping strips are laid out around parking lots, so even a coffee run usually involves the car. What Casa de Oro does well is the view. From many streets, the stone cross on Mount Helix sits on the horizon, close enough to feel like part of the neighborhood.
