The Castro area is a central San Jose pocket of older single-family homes and small multifamily buildings on a flat, gridded layout near the city's western-central neighborhoods. It is a modest, lived-in area where the value comes from location and the bones of the established housing stock. Day to day, the gridded streets and nearby corridors keep errands and transit accessible, and downtown, the freeway network, and the central shopping strips are all close. Upkeep runs block by block, lots are modest, and there is limited green space inside the immediate boundary, so outdoor time usually means a short drive to a larger park. For buyers who want a central, reasonably priced foothold and do not mind doing some work on a particular house, it is a sensible option near the middle of the city.
