Colfax is a railroad town in the Placer County foothills, and the freight trains rolling through are part of the daily soundtrack. Main Street runs beside the tracks, past the old Southern Pacific depot that now is the museum, and the California Zephyr still stops here once a day in each direction. Where town ends, Stevens Trail begins its long drop toward the North Fork of the American River, and pines and oaks have replaced the valley's orchards. Homes are a mix of older wood-frame houses close to Main Street and ranch-style and newer houses spread up the hillsides. Streets climb and bend with the slope, yards run natural more than manicured, and plenty of places look out over treetops instead of rooftops. Mornings start on North Main. The Wrecking Crew Bakery & Cafe is the bagel and donut stop with strong coffee, and Snapdragon Provisions a few doors up serves a fully vegan menu and espresso drinks. Buzz Thru Joe's is the locally owned drive-thru stand people hit on the way to the freeway. For dinner, Il Pizzaiolo bakes wood-fired Neapolitan pies on South Auburn Street, and The Red Frog, out on Highway 174, has a back patio with long views over the forest and foothills that fills up around sunset. Everyday green space is modest and close by. Colfax Ball Park, Lions Children's Park and Codfish Creek Trail cover the short outings, while Stevens Trail handles the long ones. In September the whole of Main Street turns out for Railroad Days. Groceries come from Mar-Val Food Stores on South Auburn Street, which has a deli counter inside. Downtown is walkable, but the hillsides are steep, so most errands mean driving. Interstate 80 is the lifeline in both directions, down toward Auburn and Sacramento or up toward Tahoe. Winter is the part to plan for. At this elevation snow is a real possibility, and the interstate can look different at breakfast than it did the night before. In exchange, Colfax gives you four real seasons and a main street that still pauses for the trains.
