Deer Park spreads across the hills east of St. Helena, where Deer Park Road begins its climb toward Howell Mountain. Houses sit well apart here, vineyard rows run between the properties, and the neighborhood feels more like open country than a town. Properties are a mix of country houses, a few mobile homes and larger estates, many with vineyard views, on roomy lots. The Glass Fire of 2020 burned many houses and most of Foothills Adventist Elementary School, and the school dedicated a new building in February 2025, a mark of how much rebuilding the area has done. Elmshaven at 125 Glass Mountain Lane is the neighborhood's landmark, a Victorian house built in 1885 where Ellen G. White lived from 1900 until 1915. It is a National Historic Landmark, and tours run year round. Wappo Park sits just past the boundary in St. Helena and is the closest town park, and Bothe-Napa Valley State Park, with its coast redwoods, is a drive to the north. Food means heading into St. Helena. Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch at 738 Main covers breakfast through dinner and runs a small general store, and Goose & Gander is the choice for a slow evening meal. Burgess Cellars, a small family winery on Howell Mountain just past the boundary, rounds out the local options for a glass of wine. Daily life in Deer Park depends on a car. Adventist Health St. Helena, the area's hospital, sits on Woodland Road within the neighborhood, and Silverado Trail and Highway 29 are the routes to everything else. Groceries and errands are in St. Helena. Distance between things is the price of the space. A quick coffee or a loaf of bread needs a drive, and the quiet that comes with the land goes along with it. Evenings here are dark and still, and in fall the hills pick up the color of the vines.
