Del Rio sits on the north side of Modesto in Stanislaus County, and its center of gravity is the Del Rio Country Club on Stewart Road, open since 1946. The settlement grew up around the club, with the Stanislaus River running not far away. The ground is flat valley floor, and the whole area covers a little over two square miles. Development here is spread out, a mix of residential streets, farmland and open ground instead of tight subdivisions. That gives it a rural-edge feel even though Modesto is a short drive away, and the surrounding fields keep the view wide in nearly every direction. Oakdale and Riverbank are the other valley towns that share that river. Outdoors, the country club is the big feature. It has 27 holes, with the original 18 laid out by William P. Bell and a river-side nine added in 1997, plus a driving range, putting greens, tennis and pickleball courts, bocce courts and a fitness center. It is a private club and not a public course, though it opens its doors for weddings, banquets and golf tournaments. For public open space, the Stanislaus River lies nearby, and Modesto's larger parks lie to the south. The club's own website describes three places to eat and drink, the Elderberry Lounge, the Redwood Room and a patio, with a farm-to-fork menu built on local sources. Beyond that, there is very little to eat or shop for within the community itself. A grocery run or a restaurant meal means driving into Modesto, and nothing nearby is reliably within walking range. Getting around is by car, and the roads out of Del Rio lead directly into the northern part of Modesto. There is no main street or shopping center here, so errands all happen in town. The honest limit is convenience, since every errand is a drive. Take the club away and Del Rio would have no obvious center, which is why people here point to it first.
