Grand Avenue gives Downtown Escondido the feel of an old main street, with shops, patios and bars packed along a few walkable blocks. The neighborhood is a compact grid running from Centre City Parkway east to Hickory and Ivy streets and from Washington Avenue down to Fifth Avenue, with an arm reaching out Valley Parkway toward I-15. Food is the main event. A Delight of France serves crepes and brioche French toast, O'Sullivan's Irish Pub has a dog-friendly patio and live music on weekends, and Burger Bench pairs specialty burgers with 20 craft taps. Hunsaker's is the dress-up dinner, known for a French onion soup that takes four days to make. For dessert, EscoGelato on Kalmia Street changes its flavors daily, and Manzanita Roasting Company, just past the eastern edge, handles the morning coffee. Housing is limited and varied. Apartments sit behind and above storefronts, a few older cottages hold on along the side streets, and newer infill keeps replacing parking lots and vacant parcels. The big stock of Victorian and Craftsman houses starts just south, in Old Escondido. Grape Day Park is the green space, the city's oldest park, with a Santa Fe depot, a working barn and a blacksmith shop kept by the Escondido History Center. The San Diego Children's Discovery Museum faces it across Broadway, and the California Center for the Arts, a block west on Escondido Boulevard, has a concert hall and theater on a 12-acre campus. Maple Street Plaza gives Grand an open-air room for events. A good share of daily life works on foot in Downtown Escondido. The Escondido Public Library sits on South Kalmia Street, Smart & Final is on Escondido Boulevard, and the certified farmers market fills Juniper Street on Tuesday afternoons. The Escondido Transit Center, just west on Valley Parkway, puts the Sprinter and the Breeze and MTS Rapid buses within reach. Busy nights are part of the deal. Bar crowds on Grand, event weekends at the arts center and the Friday car shows mean parking fills fast and quiet hours are never a sure thing. From April through September, Cruisin' Grand lines the curbs with pre-1974 hot rods every Friday evening, and the whole downtown turns into one long block party with chrome.
