Eastlake spreads over the rolling hills of eastern Chula Vista, a planned community that took shape in the 1990s around a lake, a golf course and the long curve of Eastlake Parkway. Rolling Hills Ranch climbs the slopes to the north, the Otay Ranch villages fill in to the south, and State Route 125 runs right through it. The lake sets the tone. It is a 21-acre pond behind a clubhouse, ringed by a paved path, and members get a beach-style pool beside it. Enagic Golf Club at Eastlake, which opened in 1991 as EastLake Country Club, is a public 18-hole Ted Robinson course on Clubhouse Drive. Chula Vista Community Park, Scobee Park, Augusta Park and Sunset View Park spread fields and playgrounds across the subdivisions, and Lower Otay Lake is a few miles farther east when you want open water and hillside trails. Homes run mostly to two-story stucco with tile roofs, arched entries and a lot of rooftop solar. Eastlake Greens and Eastlake Trails are two of the names you will see on listings, and gated condo complexes fill the spaces between the single-family tracts. Building has gone on in phases for decades, so a 1990s cul-de-sac can sit close to streets finished much later. Novo Brazil Brewing makes its Chula Pils and Nova Kombucha at its Lane Avenue brewery, where Monday pints and trivia nights keep the room busy. Most everyday eating happens at Village Walk and Eastlake Village Marketplace on Eastlake Parkway, where Otay Sushi & Crab and Cotijas Taco Shop do steady business, and the centers along Otay Lakes Road add a long row of quick lunch counters. Trader Joe's, Sprouts and a Walmart line Eastlake Parkway, and a Vons anchors the Otay Lakes Road center, so groceries are never far. A few streets near the parkway can walk to them, but most errands happen by car. The South Bay Expressway, the toll stretch of SR-125, heads south toward the 905, while Otay Lakes Road carries drivers west toward I-805. Size works against convenience in spots. A home on the far side of the lake can feel separate from the shopping, and Eastlake Parkway backs up at school and commute hours. Still, the lake path draws people out every evening, and that loop does more to define living here than any storefront.
