Edenvale carries more history than its workaday reputation lets on, and its calling card is the Hayes Mansion, a grand landmark estate built by one of the valley's prominent early families and run for years as a hotel, with formal grounds that give this stretch of south San Jose a real sense of occasion. Just as meaningful to longtime locals is what sits beside it: Edenvale Gardens Regional Park occupies the site of Frontier Village, the Old West-themed amusement park that drew Bay Area kids from 1961 until it closed in 1980, and plenty of residents can still tell you exactly where the rides used to be. Between the mansion and the regional park, the neighborhood has more green space and story than the flat tracts around it suggest. The housing runs to older subdivisions mixed with homes built after the park came down, on the level valley floor, with Monterey Road along the western edge. The honest part is the setting: light-industrial and business-park pockets line the southern and eastern edges, home to some of south San Jose's larger employers, and there is no rail inside, so Edenvale leans practical rather than polished. For buyers who want a landmark estate, a genuinely good regional park and south-valley pricing in one place, it is more interesting than it usually gets credit for.
