El Segundo took its name from Standard Oil's 1911 refinery, the company's second on the West Coast, and the Chevron plant still covers a big stretch of the city's south side. Housing in the residential core is mostly mid-century, with the typical home dating to the early 1950s. Streets mix Craftsman and Spanish-style houses on modest lots with condos and townhomes, and downtown is close enough to bike to dinner. El Segundo Beach sits at the end of Grand Avenue, where Grand meets Vista Del Mar, and it tends to be quieter than the beaches on either side. In town, Recreation Park has the Joslyn Center plus tennis, basketball and pickleball courts, and Library Park, Candy Cane Park and Hilltop Park fill in the residential blocks. Main Street and Richmond Street hold most of the local food. Jame Enoteca on Main is known for hand-rolled pasta and a spicy rigatoni, and Kagura a couple of blocks up does crisp tonkatsu cutlets and dinner sets. For coffee, Smoky Hollow Roasters roasts its own on Sierra Street, and El Segundo Brewing Company pours right on Main. Groceries are a short drive, with Ralphs on Pacific Coast Highway north of downtown and Whole Foods near the Rosecrans end of Sepulveda. A farmers market sets up on Main Street. The Metro K Line serves the business district on the east side, which helps the weekday commute more than errands. LAX sits just north across Imperial Highway, jet noise is part of daily life, and the city itself has pushed back on airport expansion over noise and air quality. Stand on the beach at Grand Avenue and you can watch departures climb out over the water while cyclists roll past on the path behind you.
